EA Games has turned its attention towards one of the most, if not the most, popular PC platforms out there – Steam. Thanks to that, we can now enjoy the golden era RTS game series, Command & Conquer, using Valve’s launcher. This has contributed to spike in popularity of CnC titles greatly. Many fans wanted to go back to their favourite production in this universe – Red Alert 2. Unfortunately, even though the game has been released on Steam, it doesn’t mean that it works correctly, especially after all those years. Many players experience issues with playing in the most popular 1920 x 1080 resolution, so here you will learn an easy and simple way to fix that.

Red Alert 2 resolution fix

When a big company like EA Games re-releases their products, we would expect it to work correctly on most modern system configurations. This sadly didn’t happen for Command & Conquer Red Alert 2. With as big fanbase as this title has, it didn’t take long for players to figure out how to deal with this situation. Follow the steps below to set the game to 1920 x 1080 or any that you like:

  1. Navigate to the location where the game is installed.

By default, the game is installed in:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Command & Conquer Red Alert II

  1. Locate 3 important files called DDrawCompat.ini, RA2.ini and RA2MD.ini
  2. Open the DDrawCompat.ini file by using any text editor (Notepad would do just fine), find SupportedResolutions line and add the one that you would like. Make sure to add commas where needed!
  3. Now, open RA2.ini file and edit ScreenWidth and ScreenHeight lines to match your desired resolution parameters.
  4. Even though not required, it is recommended to locate the following lines in the same file and set them as below:

VideoBackBuffer=no

AllowHiResModes=yes

AllowVRAMSidebar=no

  1. Repeat the last two steps for RA2MD.ini file. Make sure to save all the changes upon closing the file!

Bear in mind that this solution is not a proper setting, but a workaround to let you enjoy RA2 in modern screen resolutions. There can be some UI elements that are too small or not scaled properly. If they do not suit your needs, you can revert all the changes to their original values by manually editing the adjusted files or verify files integrity in Steam.
